Do You Need a Pet License?
Toronto Municipal Code Chapter 349, requires that all dogs and cats owned in Toronto be licensed and wearing a tag. For a small annual fee, your pet can be returned to you if accidentally lost or if there is an emergency, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year. Because the license tag contains contact information for Toronto Animal Services, your privacy is protected.
Your license fees go directly back to Toronto Animal Services to help support programs such as pet adoption, spaying/neutering and providing medical care for lost and homeless animals.
Toronto Animal Services offers reduced fees for cat and dog owners, such as reduced licensing fees for service animals (e.g., guide dogs), pets which have been sterilized, and pets which are licensed by senior citizens.
Failure to license your cat or dog each year may result in a $240.00 ticket. If you are taken to court under the current law, the maximum penalty is a $5,000.00 fine.
